After a steeply rising trend of 55% for diesel and more than 60% for petrol since May 2020, the new year heralded slight relief consumers. Diesel prices (in Gauteng) were lowered by 69.8 c/litre, while petrol prices were downwardly adjusted by 68 c/litre. The rand, weakening from 14.50 USD/ZAR in September to 15.86 USD/ZAR in December and a steep rise of no less than 348% (from April 2020 to October 2021) in crude oil prices, were to blame for the rising trend.
