Compared with the previous month, the rand weakened in March 2020 against nearly all emerging market and developed market currencies. The unweighted average change in the value of the rand amounted to -5%. Month-on-month, the rand depreciated by 9.2% against the US dollar, by 4.5% against the British pound, by 10.4% against the Japanese yen, and by 10% against the euro. The rand lost 7.5% against the Swiss franc but gained 4% against the Russian rouble. Against the Australian dollar, the rand lost 2.4%, and against the New Zealand dollar, the rand was 3.9% weaker. The rand did show a gain of 2.4% against the Brazilian real, but declined by 8.8% against the Chinese yuan.
