In 2017, household savings were marginally positive and amounted to R5.6bn, but deteriorated again in 2018 to -R3bn. In the second quarter of 2019, annualised dissaving by households amounted to R5bn. Household debt peaked at 85.7% of disposable income in 2008. This ratio has since been on a gradual declining trend and reached 70.8% at the end of 2017, but has since crept up to 72.6% in the third quarter of 2019.
