Household net saving has come under severe pressure after 2005 with dissaving (negative net saving) having been recorded for each year during 2006 to 2016. In 2013 this dissaving amounted to -R48 billion or -2.3% of household disposable income. In 2017, household savings were marginally positive and amounted to R5.6bn, but deteriorated again in 2018 to -R3bn. In the second quarter of 2019, annualised dissaving by households amounted to R5bn.
