After having grown at around double the rate of inflation during 2010-2014, household total net (nominal) wealth rose by 11% in 2017, but declined by 1.6% in 2018. In 2018, total household assets amounted to R12,8 trillion, with interest in pension funds and assets held at long-term insurers making up 34.5% of this total. Households’ exposure to residential properties amounted to 22.2% of the total. Household liabilities grew by 6.9% y/y to R2.2 trillion in 2018, while their net wealth amounted to R10.7 trillion.
