Over the past five years, exports had declined by an average of 4.8% per annum, in dollar terms, while the equivalent rate for imports had amounted to -5.4% p.a. The latest 12-month merchandise trade deficit amounted to R61.1 billion which was R77 billion less than the previous 12 months’ deficit.
