Emerging market currencies and asset classes have been under pressure since late 2013 after the US announced that it will taper and eventually end its policy of quantitative easing. However, the rate hiking phase in the US is happening very slowly, with only the second 25bp hike having been announced in December last year. Lower short-term interest rates and expectations of more cuts to come, have mostly affected only the short bond maturities.
