The Consumer Vulnerability Index (CVI) for South Africa amounted to 50 in the fourth quarter of 2016 – the same as in the previous quarter and lower than the score of 52.1 recorded for the first half of 2016. The CVI has been on a downtrend since 2009, with the average CVI score during the second half of 2016 being 7.8 points lower than in 2009. The CVI moved up sharply during 2007-2009, but had eased off during 2013-2016, fluctuating around the 50-point level.
